How to hand-wash and care for your Floks quilted wool pillow and pillow case - the key rules, a step-by-step washing guide, and what to avoid.

Can you wash a Floks quilted wool pillow?

Our innovative quilted wool pillows and cases are designed to be refreshed through hand-washing. The wool filling is removable and should not be washed. The pillow case can be hand-washed carefully - never in a machine. Alternatively, hanging the case outside on a sunny day refreshes the wool without washing.

What happens if you don’t follow the instructions?

Shrinkage - or “felting” - occurs when wool fibres experience twisting, agitation, or sudden temperature shifts. The wool’s natural crimp relaxes during processing but re-tightens with rough handling or incorrect washing, creating a dense, shrunken texture.

The key principles are:

  • No agitation - this is the primary rule
  • Match water temperatures throughout washing and rinsing
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes that shock the fibres

The correct way to wash your quilted pillow

1. Unzip the case and carefully remove the wool filling in one piece. Place it outside on a clean surface in sunshine.

2. Using mild wool detergent, gently wash and rinse your pillow case in the same temperature water (a bath or large sink works well). Gently press out excess water - never twist or squeeze.

3. Leave your pillow case on a clean, flat surface to fully dry before refilling.

The best type of bed linen to use

Always use natural, breathable bed linen with your pillow. Our natural hemp and organic cotton range complements quilted wool pillows perfectly.
