How to choose the perfect British wool duvet

How to choose the perfect British wool duvet

March 1st, 2025

Everything you need to know to choose the right wool duvet - from tog ratings and wool types to washability, packaging, and UK manufacturing.

Wool is a unique fibre and is scientifically proven to improve the quality of sleep when used in bedding. Naturally anti-bacterial and hypo allergenic due to its hygroscopic properties, moisture is absorbed and constantly released throughout the night, regulating body temperature and creating a healthy environment that is resistant to bacteria, dust mites, mildew and mould. Find out more about the wool we use here.

Easy to care for and with no need to wash, wool bedding is best refreshed by hanging outside on a cloudless day. Let the sun’s UV rays do the cleaning for you.

Our wool duvets are chemical free; the wool has been double washed in water before being carded into lofty widths ready to be sewn into GOTS certified undyed cotton casings. At the end of its long life, your duvet is fully biodegradable. Good for your sleep and good for the planet.

Why choose a Floks wool duvet?

We exist to help you enjoy a better day and that starts the night before. Every product that we design starts with the question “how will this help to improve sleep quality?”

Our duvets sit at the heart of the Floks sleep system, thoughtfully designed to bring together exceptional comfort, natural performance and enduring craftsmanship.

Filled with a generous layer of traceable British Cheviot wool, each duvet is carded into lofty, even layers that stay beautifully in place without clumping or shifting. Every duvet is made in the UK and wrapped in a GOTS-certified undyed organic cotton casing, finished with our signature Easy-Fit pocket corners to make changing the bed effortlessly simple.

Every Floks duvet comes in a reusable recycled cotton duffle bag, made to protect it for years to come.

Why wool duvets feel different to feather or synthetic

If you're switching from a synthetic or feather duvet, your new wool duvet may feel different at first - and that's entirely natural.

Unlike synthetic and feather fillings, British wool is naturally breathable and highly effective at regulating temperature. Rather than trapping heat or holding onto moisture, it helps release excess warmth and wick away the moisture your body naturally produces overnight, creating a drier, more comfortable sleep environment.

Because wool performs differently, it doesn't rely on excess bulk to keep you warm. The result is a duvet that feels lighter, while maintaining a comfortable, even temperature throughout the night.

Like any change to your sleep environment, it can take a few nights for your body to adjust. Give it a little time, and you'll begin to experience the balanced comfort and natural temperature regulation that make sleeping under wool feel so different.

Our duvets

  • Summer weight - 300 to 350* grams per square metre (gsm) of wool filling and a comparable tog rating of approximately 4 to 5* tog
  • All Season weight - 450 to 500* grams per square metre (gsm) of wool filling and a comparable tog rating of approximately 8 to 10* tog
  • Winter weight - 600 to 650* grams per square meter (gsm)of wool filling and a comparable tog rating of approximately 12 to 14*tog
  • Winter Plus weight - 950 to 1000* grams per square metre (gsm) of wool filling and a comparable tog rating of approximately 15 to 16* tog

*gsm variance is due the natural fluctuation in weight of each wool fibre.

*tog rating is an approximate comparison. Wool filled duvets are not strictly toggable due to the adaptive properties of the fibre.

Which weight duvet is best for me?

There are factors to consider when choosing the right weight duvet, and some frequently asked questions and guidance are:

“My body temperature runs hot but my partners runs cooler”

Wool adapts to body temperature by wicking away the moisture that we sweat during the night. This means that two people can share the same weight duvet and experience a comfortable night’s sleep despite running different body temperatures.

Our medium weight All Season duvet could be a good choice if this is the case in this circumstance.

“I really need to feel the comfort of weight from my duvet to help me sleep”

The weightier feel of our Winter duvet will offer both a heavier feel and temperature regulation, providing the comfort needed without overheating. You may wish to switch to an All Season duvet during the warmer summer months.

“I have hormonal issues and overheat all year round and currently sleep with a synthetic lightweight duvet”

The temperature regulating properties of wool are superior to any other type of duvet filling and a Summer weight duvet will keep you cooler and more comfortable throughout the year.

“My mid weight duvet isn’t warm enough for winter and is too hot for summer”

Many customers enjoy a great night’s sleep throughout the year with our All Season medium weight duvet, perhaps adding a wool blanket layer on very cold nights, even when they have previously needed to use different weights of alternative filled duvets. Equally, our Winter and Summer duvets work across the changing seasons and are easy to pack away in their cotton duffle bags for storage when not in use.
“I live in poorly insulated draughty home and can never keep warm in the winter”

Our heavy weight Winter Plus duvet has twice the amount of filling as our All Season and delivers super insulating properties for extra winter warmth.

“Is wool bedding a good option for children?”

Yes. Wool is naturally temperature regulating, making it an excellent choice for children, whose body temperature can fluctuate more during sleep than an adult's.

By helping to release excess heat and moisture while providing gentle insulation when needed, wool creates a comfortable sleep environment throughout the night. The result is a more settled night's sleep for little ones - and greater peace of mind for parents.

Our Mini Floks collection has also been designed with family life in mind. The range is washable to help with everyday accidents, while still offering all the natural comfort and performance of traceable British wool. Find our full Mini Floks range here.
