HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT BRITISH WOOL MATTRESS

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT BRITISH WOOL MATTRESS

March 1st, 2025

A comprehensive guide to selecting the ideal wool mattress - covering natural materials, tension options, and turnable vs. no-turn designs.

Wool is a unique fibre and is scientifically proven to improve the quality of sleep when used in bedding. Naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic due to its hygroscopic properties, moisture is absorbed and constantly released throughout the night, regulating body temperature and creating a healthy environment that is resistant to bacteria, dust mites, mildew and mould.

We have partnered with 5th generation Yorkshire bed makers Harrison Spinks to bring you a complete range of naturally filled pocket sprung mattresses. Designed by Floks and expertly crafted by Harrison Spinks.

Why choose a floks mattress?

Better days begin the night before.

Every Floks product starts with the same question: how can we help you sleep better? That thinking shapes every material we choose and every detail we refine.

A great night's sleep starts with the right foundation. That's why every Floks mattress is handcrafted using exceptional natural materials, including traceable British wool, UK-grown hemp and flax. Carefully layered by hand, these fibres create a sleep surface that's naturally breathable, supportive and designed to regulate temperature throughout the night.

At the heart of every mattress are precision-engineered pocket springs, individually tensioned to provide responsive support and excellent pressure relief. Available in Regular, Firm or Dual Tension, our mattresses can be tailored to suit the way you sleep, and our sleep specialists are always on hand to help you find the right fit.

Every mattress is made to order in the UK by skilled craftspeople and backed by a five-year guarantee.

You'll find no chemical flame retardants, foams or glues inside a Floks mattress. Just carefully sourced natural materials, chosen because they perform exceptionally well and reflect our belief that better sleep begins with sleeping naturally.

Because the quality of your day starts with what you sleep on the night before.

Why wool mattresses perform differently to synthetic alternatives

Keeping you cool and supported are some of the benefits of choosing a wool filled mattress. The unique thermoregulating properties of wool fibres keep your body in balance throughout nighttime fluctuations in temperature. Layers of British wool, hemp and flax absorb the moisture we lose throughout the night, constantly wicking it away from our bodies into the atmosphere. Perfect for allergy sufferers, wool is naturally resistant to dust mites and bacteria promoting a healthy and skin friendly sleeping

Mattress types

Dual sided - Also known as turnable, our dual-sided mattresses are designed to offer exceptional comfort for years to come.

The natural comfort layers of traceable British wool, hemp and flax, together with thousands of micro pocket springs, are mirrored on both sides of the mattress. This allows you to sleep on either side, helping to distribute wear more evenly and extend the life of your mattress.

To keep your mattress performing at its best, we recommend rotating and turning it regularly, following the care guide provided with your mattress.

Single Sided Mattresses - Also known as no-turn mattresses, our single-sided designs have one dedicated sleeping surface, so there's no need to turn them over.

They still benefit from regular rotation to encourage even wear, but they're a practical choice for anyone who prefers easier mattress care. They're particularly well suited to children's bedrooms, guest rooms or for those who may find turning a heavier mattress difficult.

Enjoy the same considered craftsmanship and natural materials, with the convenience of a mattress that's designed to be simpler to live with.

Pillow top – a single sided mattress with a built in fully sprung cloud like topper. Offering great pressure relief and no need to turn.

Zip and Link - Our Zip and Link option is available on most mattress sizes from King upwards, creating one larger sleeping surface made from two individual mattresses joined together.

This flexible design can be especially useful where access is limited, as two separate mattresses are easier to move into a room than one larger, heavier mattress. It also allows greater flexibility in your bedroom setup, making it possible to use the mattresses as two single beds when needed or as one larger bed.

A Zip and Link mattress is also a practical choice for anyone who may find turning a larger mattress more challenging, while still offering the comfort, support and craftsmanship of a Floks mattress.

That’s why we believe that there is no better commitment to your wellbeing than choosing a Floks naturally filled mattress and our fully trained sleep team will help you to find the perfect one.

There are factors to consider when choosing the right mattress and some frequently asked questions and guidance are:

"Is a firm mattress the best choice for back pain?"

A common belief is that a firmer mattress is always better for back pain, but this isn't necessarily the case.

The right mattress tension is about finding the correct balance of support and comfort for your body. A mattress that's too firm may prevent your body from settling naturally into the surface, meaning the springs cannot properly respond to the contours of your spine and joints. This can create pressure points and contribute to discomfort.

When you lie on the right mattress, your body should feel fully supported, with enough give for your shoulders, hips and other pressure points to gently settle into the surface. This allows the springs to work as intended — providing responsive support while helping to maintain healthy spinal alignment.

The best mattress isn't the firmest one; it's the one that allows your body to relax, feel supported and wake feeling refreshed.

"How do I know whether to choose Regular or Firm tension?"

Choosing the right mattress tension is about finding the right balance of support and comfort for your body.

We'll always start by understanding what you're currently sleeping on, how it feels and whether it is supporting you well. For many people, our Regular tension offers the ideal balance of comfort and support, but the right choice can depend on your body shape, sleeping position and what you're used to.

When you lie on your mattress, your body should feel fully supported, with enough flexibility for your shoulders and hips to gently settle into the surface. A mattress that's too firm may prevent your body from relaxing naturally, leaving unsupported areas and creating pressure points.

For those with a larger or heavier body frame, a Firm tension may provide the additional support needed to help maintain comfortable spinal alignment throughout the night.

Our sleep specialists are always happy to guide you towards the tension that will best suit the way you sleep.

"What benefit does a pillow top mattress offer over a standard mattress?"

A pillow top adds an extra layer of softness and comfort, creating a more luxurious and cocooning sleep experience.

Both our Pillow Top mattress and Floksy Topsy Mattress Enhancer are filled with tufted wool and built around 4,000 pressure-relieving springs. This combination delivers a beautifully soft surface while maintaining the responsive support needed to help cushion joints and ease pressure points.

The cloud-like comfort layer allows your body to gently settle into the mattress, creating a deeply relaxing sleep environment that helps you drift off naturally.

The Floksy Topsy Enhancer can also be paired with any of our dual-sided or single-sided mattresses, giving you the flexibility to add an extra layer of comfort and create your ideal sleep experience.
