How to choose the perfect wool mattress topper

March 1st, 2025

Find the right wool mattress topper for your needs - from the best-selling 600gsm Cheviot wool option to the ultimate Floksy Topsy mattress enhancer.

Wool is a unique fibre and is scientifically proven to improve the quality of sleep when used in bedding. Naturally anti-bacterial and hypo allergenic due to its hygroscopic properties, moisture is absorbed and constantly released throughout the night, regulating body temperature and creating a healthy environment that is resistant to bacteria, dust mites, mildew and mould. Find out more about the wool we use here.

Easy to care for and with no need to wash, wool toppers are best refreshed by hanging outside on a cloudless day. Let the sun's UV rays do the cleaning for you.

Our wool toppers and mattress enhancer are chemical free; the wool having been double washed in water before being carded into lofty widths ready to be sewn into their natural fibre casings. Floks toppers and enhancers comply with fire safety regulations without the use of chemical fire retardants. At the end of its long life, your topper is fully biodegradable. Good for your sleep and good for the planet.

Tried, tested and loved, you can read what our customers say about their toppers here.

Why wool toppers perform differently to synthetic/feather alternatives

Keeping you cool and supported are some of the benefits of choosing a wool filled topper or enhancer. The unique thermoregulating properties of wool fibres keep your body in balance throughout nighttime fluctuations in temperature. Perfect for allergy sufferers, wool is naturally resistant to dust mites and bacteria promoting a healthy and skin friendly sleeping environment. Layers of carded Cheviot wool in each topper stay in place, giving an even, supported foundation to every night’s sleep.

Which topper is best for me?

There are factors to consider when choosing the right topper or enhancer and some frequently asked questions and guidance are:

“I have a wool mattress and wool filled bedding, do I need a topper too?”

A wool topper adds an extra layer of comfort, softness and gentle cushioning, creating a bed that feels even more inviting while preserving the natural breathability of your sleep environment. It works with your mattress rather than changing its character, adding comfort without compromising the temperature-regulating benefits of wool.

Our Regular Wool Topper is ideal if you're looking to enhance comfort while enjoying the natural performance of British wool. If you prefer a deeper, more cushioned feel, our Luxury Deep Topper offers additional softness and support while remaining naturally breathable.

Think of a topper as the finishing layer of your sleep system — not essential, but a simple way to make an already comfortable bed feel even more luxurious.

"My foam mattress sleeps hot and doesn't feel as comfortable as it used to. Could a wool topper or enhancer help?"

If your foam mattress feels warmer than it once did, or you've noticed it becoming firmer and less supportive over time, an enhancer can be a simple way to improve comfort while extending the life of your existing mattress.

Many foam mattresses retain more heat than natural materials, which can leave some sleepers feeling too warm during the night. As foam ages, it can also lose resilience, creating a firmer feel or areas of uneven support that may affect comfort.

Our Floksy Topsy Enhancer is designed to sit on top of your mattress, adding a breathable, naturally temperature-regulating layer of British wool alongside responsive pocket springs for extra comfort and support. It's an ideal solution if you're not quite ready to replace your mattress but want to refresh the way your bed feels.

While we'd always recommend a natural wool mattress for the best sleep experience, an enhancer offers an effective way to transform the comfort of your current bed and enjoy many of the benefits of sleeping on natural materials.

“I am struggling with joint pain and this is disrupting my sleep. Would a topper offer pressure relief?”

With almost twice the amount of British wool than our regular topper, the Luxury Deep topper can help offer a layer of softness and support. For greater support and pressure relief, the fully sprung Floksy Topsy offers cloud-like comfort from head to toe. Cradling the body and supporting the spine all night long.
